Flat pack furniture is a term given to furniture that has been designed and made at a factory, with the intention of being assembled at a later date, by the consumer. The concept of this particular type of furniture was conceived when a former employee of the Swedish furniture company, Ikea was trying to transport a table in the back of his vehicle. As you can imagine, this proved to be very difficult. So he removed the legs with a saw, and re-glued them in position upon arriving at his destination. It was during a later conversation with his employers, that his latest escapade became the talk of the office, and everyone thought that the actual concept could work. Later Ikea endorsed his idea and this eventually became the basis for all Ikea products.
The benefits of purchasing this type of product for the consumer is that you don't have the problem of transporting a ready-made piece of furniture back to you home. Even a medium sized piece of furniture would pose a problem to fit into a normal family saloon. Another point to remember is that more often than not, the retailer from which you're making the purchase cannot guarantee delivery on a date that would coincide with you being able to be at home to take receipt of the product. So as you can see, the advantages of buying this type of furniture are great.

The benefits for the retailer are also good, mainly for the fact that he doesn't have the expense of storing large bulky pieces of furniture on his premises. Imagine a storeroom full of furniture ranging from tables, chairs, dressers, and cabinets, to mention just a few. It would have to be quite an area if you intended on making sales on a regular basis. Because of the irregularities in shape, having to store this type of goods would lead to a lot of space not being properly utilized. These problems would be alleviated by way of storing flat pack furniture, enabling the retailer to maximize on his inventory.
As is normally the case, whenever there is an advantage to be had, there is always usually a disadvantage to counter it, and flat pack is no exception. Sometimes, and I stress sometimes, there are times with this type of furniture that come the time of assembly, you may find yourself with items missing. 20 years ago, it was normal to find this scenario regardless of the company it was purchased from, but nowadays, due to more stringent quality control at the manufacturers this has become less of a problem.
This is a great concept in purchasing furniture. Just be sure to go through the contents of the package to ensure that you have every item listed within the assembly instructions.
